Residencies

The hallmark of GW's HSML department is our residency program. After students complete their didactic education, they enter into a one-year, full-time position within a healthcare organization. This program, based on the invaluable benefits of experiential learning, allows MHSA candidates to directly apply their classroom knowledge and problem-solving abilities in a "real-world" setting. A senior healthcare executive serves as a mentor to the resident. An alternative option to the one-year, full-time residency is a three-credit internship along with additional classes completed during the final semester on-campus.

National residency placement is based on the student's individual career objectives, academic/professional background and personal preferences (Acute Care and Ambulatory Care Management, Practice Management, Post-Acute Care Management, Consulting, etc).

In addition to providing a unique opportunity for the GW students, the residency offers the healthcare organization a considerable number of benefits. The program's curriculum provides students with a strong base of fundamental skills, in addition to best practices found in today's leading healthcare organizations. Students bring enthusiasm and excitement as well as willingness to learn and grow in their administrative residency or internship.

Most residency/fellowship applications are due by November 1st of each year, but some applications vary and having rolling deadlines. Students should allow ample time for their professional references to be written. Students are encouraged to ask for professional references in June and begin applying and gathering application.
