Message from the Editor
The Alumni Office wanted to share with all SPHHS alumni a memorandum sent out by John F. Williams, MD, EdD, Provost and Vice President for Health Affairs on September 23, 2008.
Subject: Departure of Ruth Katz and Appointment of Interim Dean, Josef J. Reum.
As you may have heard, Ruth Katz, JD, MPH, has left her position as Dean of the School of Public Health and Health Services. She is returning to the faculty as a full-time member of the Department of Health Policy. With the advice and unanimous consent of the Medical Center Faculty Senate Executive Committee, I am announcing today the appointment of Josef J. Reum, PhD, as Interim Dean of the School of Public Health and Health Services, effective immediately.
The School of Public Health has made significant strides in the last five years, for example, recruiting nationally known faculty, establishing partnerships throughout the region, and increasing funding for sponsored research. I am extremely grateful for Ruth's service and dedication to the school during this time. I am confident that this momentum will continue under Josef's leadership on an interim basis.
Josef is associate dean for administration and finance and associate professor of health services management and leadership and health policy. He joined GW in 1993 as a research scientist, working as deputy director of the Local Initiative Funding Partners Program, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation national program designed to promote innovation in the design and delivery of health care services.
He earned bachelors degrees in political philosophy and social psychology from The Catholic University of America, a Master in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and a doctorate in health policy, feminist ethics, leadership, and systems change theory from GW. Josef is a six-time recipient of the school's Excellence in Teaching Award and is a member of the Pfizer Public Health Academy of Distinguished Teachers.
Please join me in wishing Ruth the best as she returns to the faculty and welcoming Josef as Interim Dean.
Capital Connection Fund Begins Second Year by Funding Eight Student Awards
As the Capital Connection Fund (CCF) program enters its second year, SPHHS is delighted to announce that eight students and recent alumni have recently received awards. One of these award winners is Sophie Sembajwe, MS candidate in Public Health Microbiology & Emerging Infectious Diseases. Sophie received a CCF Fieldwork award to work in Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Sembajwe is assisting with laboratory assays and quality control for the Hookworm Vaccine Initiative. She will also have the opportunity to assist in the field where the hookworm vaccine trials are being administered. Click here to read more about the most recent winners.
Created through a partnership between SPHHS and the Public Health Alumni Association, CCF provides financial assistance for students to take advantage of off-campus research, internships, conferences, and other professional development activities.
