CMIA POLICES

1. Authorized CMIA User Form. Prospective Users of CMIA instrumentation must submit a “CMIA User Form” to the CMIA Director. Such includes PI sponsored support information, anticipated use of the CMIA instrumentation and workstations and signatures of both the User, as well as the PI/Supervisor. Signatures denote acceptance of responsibility for the proper operation and security of all CMIA Equipment. Upon submission of the cited form, The Director will obtain GWorld card information for incorporation into the Ross 406 lock for 24 hour CMIA access.

2. Appointments for Training. It is the responsibility of each “Authorized User” to schedule Training Sessions for proper use of CMIA instrumentation with the CMIA Director. 3. Scheduled Use. Upon completion of training, the Authorized User can sign up for time at Calendars located at each workstation. If a User does not arrive within 30 minutes of their reserved time, the time-slot may be forfeited. Any instrumentation operational problems should be immediately reported to the CMIA Director. When finished, the User will record the condition of the equipment, duration, etc. in the respective Log Book and will leave the Workstation in the condition it was found.

4. No infectious samples. Only properly, chemically-fixed cells and tissues are permitted within the CMIA.

5. Hours of Availability. 24-Hour Access is available for Authorized CMIA Users for the Macintosh Workstation, the MetaMorph Image Analysis Workstation, the TEM and ultramicrotome Workstations, the Molecular Dynamics Workstation and the Photographic darkrooms. Due to prior abuse and misuse, the X-Ray film processor, the Image Analysis Workstation and the Bio-Rad MRC 1024 confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) are available 8:30 to 4:45pm, Monday through Friday. Note: X-Ray film processors are also available in the Departments of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Pharmacology

6. Principle Investigators. PIs are requested to provide all consumable supplies, including Zip disks, CDs and Codonics & Tektronics DS printer paper and color rollers.

7. File Storage. Long-term archives are not available. It is the responsibility of each User to move files to Zip Disks, to burn CDs and to delete their files from temporary folders at each Workstation.

8. Environment. If any CMIA User does not comply with the “CMIA Policies”, the CMIA Director will notify them accordingly. If problems are not rectified, their PI/Supervisor will be notified and their access to the CMIA may be terminated.

9. External Users. Non-GWU affiliated companies and organizations may use the CMIA Bio-Rad CLSM and the JEOL 100EX TEM. Obtain hourly rates and requirements from the CMIA Director

In an effort to facilitate efficient multi user environment, CMIA has designed and implements polices and guidelines which apply to all users. The set of rules is created so that the individual users not to be overwhelmed with administration, while using the facility. However, every individual user must be aware that by maintaining continuous operations of the center, without equipment breakdown, is of interest of the entire GWU research community . CMIA users are particularly urged to carefully report their usage in the log books, which will greatly help us to identify the needs for upgrades and acquisitions as well as to justify dollars spent for maintaining an operation of the facility.
