Specialty Training in Plastic Surgery

Mary H. McGrath, M.D., M.P.H.
Professor of Surgery
Division Director

The Division of Plastic Surgery at The George Washington University Medical Center is engaged in the training of highly competent surgeons who have developed clinical proficiency in the management of congenital and acquired plastic surgery defects. Intellectual accomplishments are stressed, as are leadership roles in the surgical community. The program begins with bedside and operating room teaching, includes a full conference and didactic teaching schedule, and extends to fundamental basic science investigation.

All first year residents in the General Surgery Training Program spend a formal rotation in the Division of Plastic Surgery. Here they evaluate new and old patients, participate in surgery, and manage hospitalized patients. There is an increasing level of responsibility for these activities as their training progresses and their experience increases.

In addition, the Division of Plastic Surgery offers an ACGME accredited residency training program in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. One resident is selected each year for the two year program; preference is given to individuals who have completed training in general surgery. The plastic surgery residents have extensive clinical experience in the full spectrum of excisional, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgery including congenital anomalies, neoplasms of the head and neck, maxillofacial trauma, benign and malignant skin lesions, hand surgery, microvascular and microneural surgery, burn reconstruction, and aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery.

Since 1985, all Plastic Surgery Residents training in The George Washington University Medical Center Plastic Surgery Residency have become Board Certified in both general and plastic surgery. They are engaged in the practice of Plastic Surgery in both academic and community settings in many parts of the country.
