Welcome to the GW Medical Center Surgical Residency Program

The Department of Surgery at The George Washington University Medical Center has a long tradition, dating back to Doctor Brian Blades, of training excellent clinical surgeons who have benefitted their communities. In recent years, we have directed our efforts toward training outstanding academically oriented surgeons. This has been quite successful, and most of our graduates have gone on to rewarding academic positions or fellowships. During the next five years, training clinically competent surgeons with high academic potential will remain the focus of our Surgical Residency Training Program.

We are looking for individuals with depth of character and diligent workers, who function well clinically, who have a capacity to enjoy their experiences, and who are blessed with excellent interpersonal skills. Now and in the future, a surgeon must not only care for patients, but must also interact effectively with government and community leadership, while addressing the concerns of a well-informed and demanding patient population. This more complicated work-place will require that surgeons harness their intellectual and social abilities to the fullest.

Categorical surgical residents will spend six years with us. I truly want each individual to have not only an extraordinary educational experience, but also a memorable one. I am pleased that you are considering our program, and look forward to meeting with you.

Joseph M. Giordano, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Professor and Chairman
Department of Surgery
